| | My jailbird daughterFebruary 9, 2012 - Kristy MacKabenI'm thinking I should quit it with the scare tactics. One of the mornings Julie was complaining about school, I flat out told her it was against the law to not go to school. This is true, however, in Pennsylvania, I don't think kindergarten is requirement. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) Then, I went a step further and told her that kids who don't go to school are sent to jail. oops. Sometimes I take for granted the fact that kids (especially mine) take their parents literally, and believe every word they say. So, Julie has a very real fear that tomorrow she will be sent to jail. Scott and I are allowing her to skip school tomorrow so we can travel to Washington, D.C. to meet up with Scott's brother Todd and his wife Melinda. They are flying in from California just for a long weekend. We wanted to spend as much time with them as possible, so we're letting Julie skip school. The other day Julie threw a full blown tantrum about this. "I'm going to go to jail!!" Julie wailed, tears streaming down her face. The thing is--if you follow my blog at all, these type of outbursts can happen at any time for any reason, so this dramatic performance didn't really phase me. I tried to calm her down and explain to her that we were writing a note to her teacher to excuse her from school. She wouldn't have any of it. "NO!!! I know the police man is going to come get me and then I'm going to JAIL!!!!" When Julie is in the depths of one of these episodes, it's pretty much all consuming and there's no reasoning with her. So, I let it go every time she has tearfully brought up the subject. Finally, she realized life was going to be OK, after her teacher sent a very sweet note, saying Julie will be missed at the Valentine's party, but "I'm sure she will have wonderful time in D.C." Only then was Julie convinced that playing hooky was OK (just this once of course.)
